Mexico vs Ecuador opened the round of 32 in Mexico City with 17-year-old Gilberto Mora in Javier Aguirre’s starting XI for Mexico. It was Mora’s second start of the tournament, and it came in a knockout match that would send one side into the round of 16.
Gilberto Mora for Mexico
Mora’s selection was the clearest team news on the night. Aguirre kept the teenager in the lineup for a second straight start of the tournament, asking him to handle a knockout setting while Mexico tried to extend a perfect World Cup run on home soil.
Jorge Sanchez started at right-back, giving Mexico a more settled look behind the younger player in the front group. That setup mattered because Ecuador had arrived with the kind of pace and power Mexico expected to face all evening.
Obed Vargas on Ecuador
Obed Vargas put the challenge plainly: “We expect a really dynamic, focused team. They are very quick and very strong. It’s going to be a tough game but at home, in front of our people, we hope to come out on top.”
Mexico had won all three of their World Cup matches before this one. Ecuador came in after a surprise 2-1 victory over Germany in New Jersey, and that win left them needing another upset to keep moving. The contrast was stark: Mexico carried perfect form, while Ecuador brought the same lineup that beat Germany.
Mexico City and Azteca
Ecuador were unchanged from that Germany win, with Nilson Angulo staying on the left side and Gonzalo Plata supporting Enner Valencia. Kevin Rodriguez, who came off the bench to set up Plata’s winner against Germany, was among the substitutes against Mexico.
The buildup at Azteca included heavy rain and lightning to the north of the stadium, adding another layer to a match that already carried knockout pressure. Mexico entered with five players from Club Guadalajara, also known as Chivas, among its 26-player squad, and those five made up 19.2 per cent of the group.
For Mexico, the immediate test was simple: turn home advantage into a place in the round of 16. For Ecuador, the task was to repeat the kind of upset that carried them past Germany and do it again against a host side that had not dropped a match in the tournament.
