Paul Gervase as Dodgers designate Jonathan Hernández for assignment

paul gervase is tied to a Dodgers roster change that sent Jonathan Hernández into DFA after 12 appearances. The club moved on June 30, 2026, recalling Wyatt Mills from Triple-A Oklahoma City in the corresponding move.

Jonathan Hernández and Wyatt Mills

Hernández threw 17 2/3 innings before the move. He allowed 8.15 earned runs per nine, posted a 59.1% strand rate, struck out 18.1% of hitters and walked 14.5%.

The Dodgers had signed him to a major league deal just over six weeks earlier. He was out of options, so the club had to remove him from the 40-man roster to open the spot for Mills.

DFA Window for Dodgers

That leaves Hernández in a short holding pattern. The waiver process takes 48 hours, and the Dodgers can take as long as five days to explore trade interest before that path closes.

His radar-gun readings never disappeared. Hernández still averaged about 97 miles per hour with both his four-seamer and sinker, but the recent results never matched the velocity.

Rangers and Tommy John

The arm talent has shown up before. Hernández threw 31 innings for the Rangers in the shortened 2020 campaign and posted a 2.90 ERA, then missed 2021 after Tommy John surgery.

He followed with a 2.97 ERA in 2022, then a 5.40 ERA in both 2023 and 2024. He spent most of 2025 on the injured list in the minors, which makes this move another sharp turn in a stretch that has already forced the Dodgers to keep adjusting their bullpen.

If Hernández clears waivers, he would have the right to elect free agency because he has a previous career outright and at least three years of service time. For the Dodgers, the choice now sits between a trade, waivers or watching the roster spot move on without him.
