Southampton have already been tested twice on Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and the message back has been consistent: he is not for sale on the cheap. Aston Villa’s £18million-plus-add-ons offer for the centre-back was rejected, following Benfica’s €20million bid last weekend, underlining how quickly his valuation has moved after a season in which he became a key part of Southampton’s rise.

The timing makes the situation even more interesting. Harwood-Bellis has made only two appearances this season, but that is enough for Premier League clubs to start pushing hard. Southampton may have won a promotion battle to keep him in 2024 after triggering the obligation to sign him from Manchester City, yet they are already having to defend his market value again.

Why Aston Villa need him

Aston Villa’s interest is not hard to understand. Ezri Konsa is expected to move to Arsenal, which leaves a central-defence gap to fill, and Harwood-Bellis fits the profile of a player clubs chase early: young enough to improve, experienced enough to trust, and already tested in a pressure environment. He is a former Manchester City academy player who had loan spells before joining Southampton, so he has been through the kind of path that usually appeals to top-flight recruiters.

Southampton, though, have every reason to be selective. Harwood-Bellis made 48 appearances in all competitions last term, including 41 Championship games and both legs of the play-off semi-finals. That volume matters because it shows he was not just a squad player in a promotion run; he was central to it. He also carried that form into the international stage, making his England debut against the Republic of Ireland in November 2024 and scoring.

Southampton’s position

The club’s stance suggests they view him as more than a quick-profit asset. On August 8, he played the full 90 minutes in Southampton’s 2-0 League Cup win over Colchester United, and on August 16 he completed another full match in the 2-2 draw with Watford in Southampton’s Championship opener. That is not the profile of a player being prepared for a fast exit, especially with Southampton next in action against Stoke City on August 22.

Villa’s bid may still be a sign of where the market is heading. An £18million offer, even with add-ons, is a serious attempt to start a negotiation rather than close one. But Southampton have already shown they are willing to wait for the right figure. Benfica found that out first, and Aston Villa have now found it too.

For Harwood-Bellis, the interest is the clearest sign yet that his stock has risen beyond a single promotion season. For Southampton, the bigger question is whether they are protecting an important defender or setting up the kind of sale that only becomes obvious later, when the offers get even larger.
