Scott Bessent Defends $1.4 Billion Trump Crypto Earnings in CBS News Interview — Scott Bessent Cbs News Interview

In a Scott Bessent CBS News interview on Thursday, the Treasury secretary said President Trump’s roughly $1.4 billion in crypto earnings do not create an appearance problem. Kelly O'Grady conducted the exclusive interview, which put Bessent on the record after the disclosure released earlier this week.

“I don't think there's an appearance problem,” Bessent said when asked about the earnings. The financial disclosure said Trump has earned approximately $1.4 billion from crypto ventures since beginning his second term, including $TRUMP and World Liberty Financial.

Bessent also described the administration’s approach as “This is an innovation presidency.” The interview covered more than the disclosure, but the crypto comments drew the clearest line between the president’s financial gains and the administration’s push for looser cryptocurrency rules.

Congressional Democrats have said Trump’s crypto windfall presents a conflict of interest because of that regulatory push. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly previously told CBS News on Tuesday that there are no conflicts of interest in the disclosure.

World Liberty Financial

The disclosure named World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company backed by Trump and his family, and the meme coin $TRUMP. Those holdings are the basis for the earnings figure that has become the focus of the dispute over whether the president’s financial stake overlaps with policy decisions.

Bessent’s comments leave the criticism in place and the administration’s response unchanged: defend the disclosure, deny the appearance problem, and continue the broader cryptocurrency agenda without outlining any new step on the conflict question.
