Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his debut in India vs England T20, stepping into the second T20 international between England and India at Old Trafford on Saturday. India reached 118-2 after 12 overs, with the debut itself becoming the live thread in a high-scoring chase of attention and overs.
Old Trafford Sees Sooryavanshi
The 15-year-old debutant was the immediate focus as the innings moved on around him. The crowd were disappointed to see Sooryavanshi go, which is the sort of reaction that tells you the first appearance had already become the main event inside a live match feed.
That came in a setting where a good total was already being framed in cricketing terms. Nasser Hussain asked, “220?” when asked what would be a good score here, and the ground had an average total of about 200 since 2018, with England having made 304 there last year.
Ishan Kishan And India
India’s progress before and after the debut was steady rather than chaotic. They were 50-1 after 5 overs, with Rohit Sharma on 30 and Ishan Kishan on 0, then moved to 65-2 by the end of the powerplay after Abhishek holed out to Tom Banton at deep square in the 6th over.
From there, the over-by-over climb kept the innings alive. India were 74-2 after 7 overs, 83-2 after 8, 89-2 after 9, and 96-2 after 10, before reaching 108-2 after 11 overs and 118-2 after 12 overs.
Phil Salt In The 11th Over
There was a clear complication in the middle overs. Ishan Kishan was dropped by Phil Salt in the 11th over, but the ball still went for four, a swing in the innings that denied England the cleaner stop they wanted and kept India moving.
England kept changing pace around the bat. Sam Curran was brought on in the 6th over, Adil Rashid returned in the 8th, Liam Dawson bowled a maiden-like 9th over with six singles, and Harry Brook brought on Tongue in the 12th over.
Shreyas Iyer also had to take treatment on his hand after being hit in the 12th over and continued batting, finishing that point of the innings on 28 while Kishan was on 26. Sooryavanshi’s debut gave the innings its headline, but the batting card around him showed India still had enough structure to keep pushing through the middle.
