The service comes after a career that stretched from 1974 to 1977 in Formula 1, where he raced in 17 grands prix for Embassy Racing with Graham Hill and Hesketh Racing. He is remembered most for helping save Nikki Lauda after the shocking crash in 1976 at the Nurburgring.

Christ Church in Clifden

Edwards had retired to Clifden some years ago, so Thursday’s service brings the farewell back to the place he chose for his later life. A cremation ceremony for family and close friends will follow after Thursday’s funeral mass at Shannon Crematorium.

Born in Cheshire in 1942, he was known by many as Mr Sponsorship for the way he raised funds and brought in backers. That reputation sat alongside his racing record, including nine appearances at Le Mans and a best finish of fourth at the Le Mans 24-Hour race.

Jade and Natasha

Edwards is survived by his daughters Jade and Natasha, while Flynn and Reilly May are named among the grandchildren who carry his memory forward. He was predeceased by his son Sean, who died in a racing accident in 2013, leaving Thursday’s Funeral Mass as both a public farewell and a family gathering around the life he built after Formula 1.
