Haaland scored twice and Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in Brazil–norway, ending Brazil’s World Cup run in the round of 16. Norway reached the quarterfinals and will meet the winner of Mexico and England.
The match in New York stayed 0-0 through halftime before Norway took control after the break. Haaland’s double separated the teams, and Brazil never recovered enough to turn the result back.
Bruno Guimaraes and Nyland
Brazil had its clearest route back in the 11' minute after Ajer fouled Cunha in the area and a monitor review changed the referee’s decision. Bruno Guimaraes took the penalty, but Nyland dove to his right at medium height and saved it.
That miss fit the rest of Brazil’s night. The chance came after VAR intervention, yet Norway still walked away with the 2-1 win that sent Brazil out of the tournament.
Solbakken’s second-half move
Solbakken changed the shape at the start of the second half by sending on Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup for Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa. Ancelotti made no changes at the same point, and the difference in response showed once the game reopened.
Norway had already seen Berg have a goal disallowed for offside after Sorloth delivered a ball from the right. Even without that score, the result stood because Haaland finished the job and Norway managed the match from there.
Brazil’s four-match edge
The loss also extended Brazil’s strange run against Norway. Before this match, Brazil had never beaten Norway in four previous meetings, with two draws and two losses.
Now the record has turned into a knockout exit for Brazil and a quarterfinal place for Norway. For the side that lost the penalty and still fell 2-1, the margin was thin; for Norway, the next step is the winner of Mexico and England.
