New York City health officials report 14 Legionnaires' Disease cases

New York City health officials said the Upper East Side Legionnaires' disease cluster has grown to 14 cases, spreading across zip codes 10075, 10028, and 10128. The Health Department is still working to learn where the exposure began.

Dr. Alister Martin said officials identified the cluster early when there were just two cases. In his statement Sunday, he said they had "acted swiftly and decisively, setting holiday plans aside to step up for our fellow New Yorkers."

The latest count gives residents and visitors a clearer picture of how far the investigation has reached. The cluster first drew attention in Carnegie Hill and Yorkville, where the Health Department had begun investigating 10 reported and confirmed cases before the area later expanded to the Upper East Side and Lenox Hill.

That spread across three zip codes means the investigation is not limited to a single block or building. People in 10075, 10028, and 10128 are part of the area now being watched as officials try to narrow down the source.

Martin said more work remains as officials learn more about the source of exposure and the cases themselves. Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella, and the Health Department said it has not yet identified the origin of the current cluster on the Upper East Side.

The question now is the source of exposure for the Upper East Side cluster. Until that is pinned down, residents in the affected zip codes will be left with a wider area under review rather than a single known point to avoid.
