The Atlanta Braves called up Owen Murphy on Monday, giving the pitching prospect a chance to join the major league roster during a busy stretch of moves. If Murphy is used in a game, he would make his major league debut.
The promotion came as Atlanta continued to adjust its pitching staff after Sunday’s 10-9 loss to the New York Mets. Martín Pérez left that game after being hit by Juan Soto’s line drive, and the Braves later placed him on the 15-day injured list on Monday.
More roster changes for Atlanta
The Braves made several other moves as well. Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment after allowing five runs on five hits in two innings on Sunday. Atlanta also recalled JR Ritchie and José Azócar, while Eli White was placed on paternity leave.
Pérez had been one of Atlanta’s more steady rotation options before the injury, posting a 3.54 ERA in 18 games, including 14 starts. Carrasco, who is 31 years old, had a 3.89 ERA with one save in 27 games before his DFA.
Ritchie’s move to Gwinnett on Sunday made room for his return after he earned his first save in Saturday night’s 14-3 win over New York. The Braves’ latest set of transactions leaves Murphy in position to provide another arm, with the club looking for short-term answers while injuries and role changes continue to reshape the staff.
