Louisiana State Senator Larry Selders has died at 44 after he is believed to have suffered a possible heart attack at an event Tuesday evening. Governor Jeff Landry said he and Sharon were deeply saddened to hear of Selders’ passing and prayed for his family.
Jeff Landry on Selders
Landry wrote that Selders was a gentle giant who was respected by all. He also said, "We will hold him and his family in our prayers."
Selders’ death ends the service of a Baton Rouge Democrat who had only recently moved from the State House to the State Senate. He was elected to the State Senate last year after serving as a state representative and filled the seat that U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields vacated to run for Congress.
May hospital stay
In May, Selders was hospitalized because of a heart condition. His office said then that "He is receiving care from his medical team and is surrounded by his loved ones" and that "He will be temporarily unavailable as he focuses on his treatment and recovery."
The report of his death leaves the exact medical cause unstated. The known facts are limited to the possible heart attack Tuesday evening, the earlier heart condition in May, and the death that followed. Selders is survived by his wife and two sons.
