Nottingham fire crews were sent to a scrapyard blaze on Radford Road in Old Basford after smoke rose over Nottingham on Wednesday, July 8. Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service said six appliances and an aerial ladder platform were at the scene.
Michelle Burton captured a photo of the smoke from Old Market Square, while people in the Hucknall Road and Radford Road area reported black smoke overhead. Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service told local residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area while crews worked.

Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service said, "We're currently in attendance at a scrapyard fire on Radford Road, Basford. The call came in at 10.31am." It also said, "We've got six fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform in attendance, and understand there is a large smoke plume."
Nottinghamshire Police later said emergency services were dealing with a large-scale fire at a scrapyard in Radford Road. Police said a number of properties were evacuated and that road closures would be in place for some time in Radford Road to the junction of Northgate.

The smoke spread far enough to be seen in Nottingham city centre, and thick plumes were visible from miles around. That left nearby residents dealing with closed roads, a wider exclusion area, and advice to keep homes and workplaces sealed while the fire was extinguished.
The fire service had closed off Radford Road as it dealt with the blaze at the industrial scrap yard. Inquiries were ongoing to establish further details, and whether anyone had been injured had not been established.
Old Market Square
For anyone in the affected area, the immediate priority was simple: stay clear of Radford Road, use the alternate route away from Northgate, and keep windows and doors shut until crews finished at the site.
