Rob Reiner gets posthumous Emmy nomination with The Bear

Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy nomination for The Bear, one of eight Emmy Award nominations the series earned for its penultimate season. The nomination lands in a crowded awards cycle for a show that has already built a large voting base across four seasons.

Reiner was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor for his recurring role in the series, where he appeared as a restaurant adviser in season four. Ayo Edebiri is also in the mix for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for The Bear, while Jamie Lee Curtis received an Outstanding Guest Actress nomination for her recurring role.

Television Academy nomination tally

The Television Academy announced this year’s nominations on Wednesday, and The Bear came away with eight total nods. Across four seasons, the show has now collected 57 Emmy nominations and 21 wins, a track record that keeps it in the awards conversation even as its latest haul is smaller than in past years.

Last year, the series picked up 13 nominations for its third season and left with zero wins. Before that, its second season drew 23 nominations and produced 11 wins, which makes this year’s total the lightest since the show debuted in June 2022.

June 25 and season four

The timing adds a wrinkle. The Bear premiered its final season on June 25, but the nominations now in play are for its penultimate season, so the voting window is still rewarding the show’s middle stretch rather than its finish.

That is where Reiner’s nomination lands: a late-career recognition for a recurring role in a season that aired before the series’ final run. The category places him alongside the rest of the show’s acting field, with the award result to be settled at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14.

Sept. 14 on CBS and Paramount+

For viewers tracking the awards race, the practical takeaway is simple: The Bear remains a major player, but this year’s eight nominations suggest a quieter vote than the one that produced its biggest haul. Reiner’s nod gives the season an emotional center, while Edebiri and Curtis keep the series visible in the acting categories.

The winners will be announced at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14 on CBS and Paramount+, and the remaining question around Reiner’s nomination is which episode or episodes the branch used to make its case.
