Meta says WhatsApp and Instagram users can now let Muse Image reuse public Instagram posts and reels to generate AI content, and the setting is on by default. Users can turn that tagging option off, but public photos, videos, reels, posts, and stories can otherwise feed new AI creations.
Muse Image in Meta AI
Muse Image is Meta's inaugural image-focused AI model from Superintelligence Labs. Meta says the model uses advanced reasoning to better understand complex prompts and blend multiple photos into high-quality creations.
In the Meta AI app, users can @-mention Instagram accounts to bring specific profiles into images. Meta said, "You can also @-mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles right into your images," and added, "Whether you want to design a custom event invitation, mock up a collaborative creative concept, or generate a personalized graphic, tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual that's ready to post".
WhatsApp and Instagram rollout
The feature is being embedded into WhatsApp and Instagram. The rollout starts in limited countries.
That makes the practical question less about whether the feature exists and more about where it is live right now. A user in a rollout country can run into it inside Meta's own apps before it reaches Facebook, Messenger, and advertisers through Meta Advantage+ creative.
Public Instagram content rules
Meta says people may be able to create content with Instagram content using AI features at Meta. The company also says reused content may be discoverable in search engine results depending on the settings of the other user.
That default-on choice is the friction point. Meta says users have complete control over how their content can be tagged for AI creation and can turn the setting off, yet the feature starts enabled unless they change it.
If an Instagram account becomes private for longer than 24 hours, reels, posts, and stories using that content will be deleted from Instagram. Existing content created by others will stay up even after the account switches to private.
The most immediate step for anyone with a public Instagram account is to check the AI tagging setting before a username starts feeding new visuals in the Meta AI app. The unresolved issue is which limited countries get the WhatsApp and Instagram rollout first.
