Prince Harry made the Duke Of Sussex Birmingham Trip to Birmingham Children's Hospital today, visiting on behalf of WellChild and marking the 20th anniversary of the first WellChild nurse. Staff applauded as he arrived, then he hugged a nurse and bent down to speak with a young patient.
During the visit, he told nursing staff and WellChild executives, “I don't know if you hear it enough, the difference that you make every single day is quite literally changing daily lives” and added, “But hospitals like this don't run without people like you, and families like this can't be families that they want to be at home without the expertise and the skill set that you're handing over to them and WellChild is right at the centre of that.” He also said, “I understand, and we understand that becomes harder every week with cuts and financial difficulties...just the insanity that that seems to be circulating, not just in this country but in general.”
WellChild and Birmingham Children's Hospital
The role of the WellChild nurse was created in 2006 to support children with complex medical needs and their families. Harry became patron of WellChild in 2007 and kept the charity when he stepped back as a working royal in 2020, leaving this visit tied to a role he has held across two very different phases of his public life.
The Birmingham Children's Hospital appearance was Harry's third official engagement since arriving in the UK on Monday evening. Before this visit, he attended an Invictus Games discussion at Chatham House on Tuesday and held private meetings at the Royal Hospital Chelsea with Invictus managers and trustees yesterday.
Security dispute and Mail case
The hospital stop also came against the backdrop of a security dispute that shaped the rest of the trip. Harry and Meghan had intended to bring Archie and Lilibet to the UK, but the family did not come to London because police protection was not offered for the trip, and Harry lost a long-running legal battle last year over guaranteed police protection while in the UK.
That context helps explain why he was staying in an undisclosed location after it was made clear he could not stay at Buckingham Palace. The public focus on Birmingham came as the trip was also overshadowed by Harry's lost court case against the Mail newspapers while he was on stage at the Tuesday event.
Invictus Games 2027 in Birmingham
Harry's Birmingham visit also linked the charity work to the next stage of the Invictus Games. Invictus Games competitors were making their way to Birmingham for an event tomorrow marking one year to go to the Invictus Games 2027, after The Spirit of Invictus left London's Euston station this morning carrying competitors, stakeholders and some media.
For families tied to WellChild, the immediate takeaway is practical: Harry used the visit to put the nurse role back at the centre of the discussion, and he did so while the wider trip remained shaped by the security arrangements that kept Meghan, Archie and Lilibet out of London.
