FIFA has appointed João Pinheiro to referee the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal between Argentina and Switzerland in Kansas City.
The assignment immediately draws attention because Pinheiro has already been at the center of criticism for a previous UEFA Champions League semifinal decision, when he did not award Bayern Munich a penalty after an apparent handball by João Neves during the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Pinheiro's World Cup background
This will be Pinheiro's first match involving Argentina at the tournament, but he has already officiated Switzerland twice at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the group stage, he oversaw Switzerland's 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a match in which he showed three yellow cards and a straight red card to Tarik Mehremović.
Later in the tournament, Pinheiro was in charge of Switzerland's Round of 16 win over Canada and South Africa, where he issued two yellow cards.
Why the appointment matters
The quarterfinal brings together a defending world champion in Argentina and a Switzerland side trying to reach the first World Cup semifinal in its history. Argentina advanced with a comeback victory over Egypt in the Round of 16, while Switzerland booked its place by eliminating Colombia.
That context makes the referee appointment especially notable. Pinheiro is not a new face in this World Cup, and FIFA has now placed him in one of the tournament's biggest knockout matches. The decision ensures that the official who has already handled two Switzerland games will now take charge of Argentina and Switzerland in Kansas City.
