Is Caitlin Clark playing tonight? Yes — Clark returned to the Indiana Fever lineup on Wednesday night, but her comeback came with a minutes restriction after she had been working through back issues.
That made the key question less about whether she would be available and more about how much she could actually contribute. Clark was back in a 106-92 loss to Los Angeles after missing time, and she made clear that she did not want to rush the process.
“I told them, ‘I don’t want to come back unless I’m 100% full go,’” Clark said. “Why would I be out there to play 20 minutes? I'm out there to win and give everything I have to this team.”
That is the core of the story. Clark is back, but the Fever are still managing her return carefully, and she is still trying to get into rhythm after a stop-start stretch of the season.
Why Clark was limited
Clark said the restriction was not her call, adding that “was not my decision. That was somebody else’s decision.” She also explained how difficult it is to find a flow when the minutes come in short bursts.
“It’s just really hard when you’re playing three minutes, (sub) out, three minutes, three minutes, then you’re on the bench,” she said. “It’s really, really hard to get into a flow.”
Stephanie White said the adjustment is part of the process after a player has missed time.
“Anytime you’ve missed a couple weeks, it’s going to take time to get acclimated,” White said. “It’s going to take time to build endurance … It's just a tough scenario when you’re on a minutes restriction and you’re trying to get back into rhythm throughout the course of the season. She’s going to continue to get better, and we’re going to continue to get better as we get her working back in.”
How Clark looked in her return
Even with the restriction, Clark showed enough to remind the Fever what she brings. She finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and four turnovers, shooting 4-of-12 from the field and 1 of 6 from 3-point range.
The numbers tell a simple story: there was some rust, but also the familiar competitive edge. Clark said her body felt great, and she noted that she had responded well in workouts, even if game action is a different challenge.
That is why the next few games matter. Clark was back on Wednesday night after a five-game layoff, but the real test will be how quickly she can get back to her normal level once the minutes restriction eases. For the Indiana Fever, that is the balance now: keep her healthy, build her endurance, and let the rhythm return over time.
