Royval says UFC is trying to push him out of the Top 5 Flyweight rankings against Lone'er Kavanagh

Brandon Royval believes the UFC booked his fight with Lone'er Kavanagh at UFC 329 for more than just entertainment value. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship Flyweight title challenger said during UFC 329 media day that he thinks the matchup is designed to push him out of the Top 5 Flyweight rankings.

Royval is scheduled to meet Kavanagh on the main card inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 125-pound bout comes after Kavanagh's win over Brandon Moreno at UFC Mexico City, a result that Royval said made the matchup easy to see coming.

Royval saw the fight coming quickly

Royval said he expected the UFC to offer him the fight almost immediately after Kavanagh beat Moreno. He said that as soon as the fight was over, he knew the promotion would bring the matchup to him, and he added that he believed he was being told about it literally the next day. In his view, the speed of the booking said plenty about how the UFC sees the fight.

That is also why Royval said the situation feels personal. He described Kavanagh as someone trying to take his spot, and he said he has spent about four to five years in the Top 5, which covers most of his UFC career. For a fighter who has stayed near the top of the division for so long, the possibility of being pushed down carries extra weight.

Why the matchup matters to Royval

Royval did not frame the fight as just another test against a surging contender. He said the UFC made the fight because it is exciting, but he also made clear that he views it as a rankings-protection bout. In his words, it is his job to make a statement and stay in the Top 5.

That message fits the stakes of the matchup. Kavanagh arrives with momentum after the Moreno win, while Royval is trying to defend the standing he has built over years in the division. Royval said he has always approached fights with this kind of edge, but this one feels different because he believes the promotion is trying to move him out of the group he has occupied for most of his UFC run.

Royval also pointed to the booking itself as part of the message. He said the UFC made the fight because it is the kind of bout fans want, and he expects that to show in the cage. For him, the opportunity is simple: fill his pocket full of cash, make a statement, and put on another high-level, exciting fight.

At UFC 329, that is exactly what Royval says he plans to do.
