Taylor Fritz was the No. 6 seed and the last American man standing. Fritz said he received treatment on his right knee during the second set, a problem that sat against a season in which he had been playing through knee tendinitis.
Wimbledon quarterfinals on No. 1 Court
Zverev, the No. 2 seed, controlled the match on No. 1 Court with the steadier patterns. Zverev won three-quarters of the points on his second serve and had twice as many winners as unforced errors for most of the afternoon, which kept Fritz from extending rallies into longer exchanges.
That mattered because Fritz had entered with the advantage in the matchup. Fritz had won seven matches in a row against Zverev and held a 10-5 record in the rivalry coming into the quarterfinal, a run that made the straight-sets result a sharp reversal rather than a routine seed-vs-seed win.

Last month, Fritz beat Zverev on grass in Germany, so Wednesday’s result flipped the recent form without changing the larger tournament picture for Zverev. Zverev had not previously been past the fourth round at Wimbledon, even after winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, and this run carried him into territory he had never reached at Wimbledon.
Fritz’s post-match comments made the physical strain hard to ignore. Fritz said, “I would have liked to feel 100 percent and try to give him a match” and added, “I felt fine, felt really good in my warm-up actually. Felt like my warm-up was great. Then, yeah, I have no answers as to why three games in it was like that.”
Arthur Féry at Wimbledon
Wednesday also produced another semifinalist in Arthur Féry, a British wild card who upset Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 on Centre Court. That result and Zverev’s win left the Wimbledon semifinals with a new shape, and Zverev was set to face Arthur Féry next.
For Fritz, the immediate practical consequence is simple: the draw no longer offers the route he had built through a long run of success against Zverev. For Zverev, the quarterfinal win changes his tournament from a deep run into a first semifinal at Wimbledon, with the next match now set by the Arthur Féry result on Centre Court.
Other quarterfinal action continued on No. 1 Court, where Linda Nosková played Elise Mertens, but the day’s defining shift came on Zverev’s side of the draw: Fritz’s streak over him ended, and Zverev finally moved beyond the Wimbledon barrier that had stopped him at the fourth round.
