Tennis Under the Lights is underway in Richmond, and the timing carries added meaning: July 10 would have been Arthur Ashe’s 83rd birthday.
On that day, David Harris, Ashe’s nephew, spoke with Virginia This Morning host Amy Lacey about the series and the effort behind it. Harris has been keeping Ashe’s contributions top of mind in Richmond and beyond, and this event series is part of that work.
What Tennis Under the Lights is meant to do
The series is designed to grow tennis while strengthening the Richmond community. Just as important, donations from the events support youth programs run by the Richmond Tennis Association and Metro Richmond Tennis Club.
That gives the series a straightforward purpose: bring people together around tennis while helping fund programs for young players in the area.
Where the remaining events are happening
There are three more events left in the series, and they are being held at Byrd Park. The events run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at 600 S. Arthur Ashe Blvd., Richmond, VA 23221.
For Richmond, the series also serves as another reminder of Ashe’s lasting legacy. And with Virginia This Morning preparing to turn 20 in October, the July 10 conversation added a local spotlight to a story that connects sports, community and history.
