Colt Emerson’s slump is not good, and the numbers make that plain. Over his last 15 games, the 20-year-old has hit.170/.250/.234 with 21 strikeouts and five walks, a rough stretch that has put his early major league run under a brighter spotlight.

What makes the slump easier to understand, though, is that the strikeout problem was already there before Seattle called him up. In Triple-A Tacoma, Emerson was striking out at a 26.3 percent clip, so the current issues have not come out of nowhere. The move to the majors simply made the weakness more visible.

The strikeouts were already part of the story

Emerson had enough talent to earn the promotion, but he was not arriving as a finished hitter. Seattle brought up a young player who was still trying to solve a strikeout problem, and better major league pitching, command and scouting reports have only made that challenge more obvious.

Through his first 43 games in the majors, Emerson has shown why the upside is still worth tracking, but also why there was risk in pushing him forward before the contact issues were fully settled. Nobody should be shocked that strikeouts have followed Emerson to the big leagues. It was always going to be risky, and the big leagues aren’t a developmental spa.

That does not mean the story is settled. Emerson is still young, and the Mariners are evaluating a hitter whose long-term value will depend on whether he can make enough contact for the rest of his tools to play. Right now, the recent slump is less a surprise than a reminder of the adjustment he was already facing before Seattle made the call.
