John Arne Riise: Martin Odegaard Galatasaray agreement claims dismissed as Arsenal stance becomes clear

Reports that Martin Odegaard had reached an agreement to join Galatasaray have been firmly dismissed, with multiple sources pushing back on the idea that Arsenal’s captain is close to an exit.

The claim raised eyebrows because it involved one of Arsenal’s most important players at a time when Mikel Arteta’s side are trying to build on last season’s Premier League title and their run to the Champions League final. But the latest line from Goal is clear: there is no truth to the links between Odegaard and the Turkish club.

Why the story gathered pace

The initial suggestion came from Selman Ozturk, who said Galatasaray had reached an agreement with Odegaard on every matter. He also claimed that the player’s agent, Bjorn Kvarme, had been in Istanbul last week and that negotiations with Arsenal were centred on a fee under €40m or long-term instalments.

That is the sort of detail that can make a transfer story look credible at first glance. But the crucial point is that the reports did not stand up to scrutiny. Goal said there was no truth to the links, and sources told GOAL that the claim was false.

Arsenal have little reason to entertain it

Arsenal are not in a position where they need to weaken their core without a very clear sporting reason. Last season’s title win changed the picture for the club, and the expectation now is that success should be used to strengthen, not undo, the squad.

That is why Odegaard matters so much. He is the captain, he is central to Arsenal’s structure, and he remains one of the players around whom Mikel Arteta can build. Even if rumours linked Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli with possible departures as well, Odegaard sits in a different category because of his role and influence.

Why Odegaard was linked with a move

The speculation was driven partly by the idea that Arsenal might consider a major sale if the numbers were right. Paul Merson suggested that, as uncomfortable as it sounds, clubs may have to think about selling a player like Odegaard because teams would still queue up for him. He also pointed to the need for pace up front, saying a midfielder in Odegaard’s position needs runners to work with.

Mick Brown also framed the discussion around Arsenal’s attacking patterns, noting that in the early part of last season the biggest threat was Odegaard linking up with Saka. In other words, the transfer noise was not really about a lack of quality. It was about whether Arsenal could ever be tempted by a big enough offer, and whether the squad would look different if they decided to cash in.

For now, though, the answer appears straightforward. Odegaard has not agreed to join Galatasaray, Arsenal sources have dismissed the claims, and the captain remains central to what comes next at the club.
