Iranian forces attacked the Cyprus-flagged MV GFS Galaxy in the Strait of Hormuz, and the ship’s engine room suffered significant damage before one crew member was reported missing. The US answered with a fresh wave of strikes, while Iran said the waterway was closed until further notice.
US Central Command said the vessel could not continue its journey after the attack. The UK's Maritime Trade Operations said military authorities told it the crew had abandoned ship and were in a lifeboat, turning the incident from a shipping disruption into a search problem for one unknown crew member.
MV GFS Galaxy in the Strait
US Central Command said the IRGC blatantly attacked the Cyprus-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement said US strikes hit 140 Iranian military targets, including missile and drone sites, communication networks and coastal surveillance locations. Pete Hegseth said, "Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay."
Iran's parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf used X to set out Tehran's line after the exchange of strikes. He wrote, "the \"era of one-sided deals is OVER\"" and, "We told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking." Earlier on Sunday, state media said Iran had closed the Strait after firing a naval cruise missile at a vessel attempting to sail along an unapproved route.
Strait of Hormuz and Iran
The account from Iran and the account from US Central Command do not match on the key sequence. The Guards said the vessel was hit by warning shots and stopped after ignoring repeated instructions, while US Central Command said the ship was still moving through the Strait when the IRGC attacked it. That split matters because it shapes whether the incident is being treated as a response to a route violation or as an attack on a commercial ship in transit.
The wider exchange this week has already spread beyond the Strait. Earlier this week, three commercial tankers were attacked and the US and Iran exchanged strikes. The IRGC said the US had targeted a number of coastal bases and telecommunications towers on the southern coast, and Iran said its first phase of retaliation included strikes on the Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan, where it said the command and control centre and MQ9 drone hangars were destroyed.
