East Midlands Railway cut its timetable on Monday as Nottingham weather heat continued to reduce the number of trains available. The operator asked passengers to check journeys before travelling and said only a small number of services were being changed.
Philippa Cresswell, the customer experience director, apologised for the disruption and said: "Our priority is to keep as much of the network running as possible while continuing to operate safely." She also said: "By making temporary changes to a small number of services, we can better protect the wider timetable."
Nottingham and Worksop
From 12:00 BST, services on the Robin Hood Line and Nottingham between Nottingham and Worksop were suspended. Services from Nottingham to Leicester were also suspended from the same time, leaving fewer options on routes that usually link Nottingham with nearby destinations.
East Midlands Railway said the heat was affecting the number of trains it could use because additional checks and maintenance were required. It said the reduced Intercity timetable would run on Monday, while Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich services through Nottingham were to operate only between Norwich and Sheffield.
Network Rail and EMR
The operator said it was working with Network Rail to monitor conditions and return services to normal. Passengers who still needed to travel were encouraged to do so before noon where possible, and to carry plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and use shaded areas or station waiting rooms.
For people using Nottingham routes, the practical change was simple: travel before noon if possible, and check whether the journey still runs in full before setting out. The suspended services and the cut-back Intercity plan mean Monday travel is limited first by time, then by route.
