Spain's anthem has no lyrics before World Cup semifinal vs. France — the Spanish National Anthem stays silent for a reason

This is one of football’s strangest little spectacles: a World Cup semifinal, a huge occasion, and a national anthem that simply refuses to behave like one. Spain will face France at 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, July 14, and there will be no chorus of players singing along because the Spanish National Anthem has no official lyrics.

That is not a quirk invented for the night. It is the result of history, politics and a long, awkward attempt to force words onto a piece of music that already had an identity of its own. Spain’s anthem is known as The Royal March and Marcha Real, and it has remained lyricless for a very simple reason: the earlier words were dropped after the Franco era.

Why Spain do not sing

Marcha Real was composed in 1761 as a military march for the Spanish Infantry. Like so many national symbols, it picked up layers of meaning as the country changed around it. Then came the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, during which lyrics were written by a fascist. After General Francisco Franco died and Spain transitioned from dictatorship to democracy, those lyrics were dropped.

That is why, decades later, Spain can still arrive at the business end of a World Cup without the usual pre-match singalong. The anthem exists, the ceremony exists, the emotion exists — but the words do not. And in a tournament built on ritual, that absence stands out every time.

The attempts to give it words

Spain did try to put lyrics back into the anthem’s story. In 2008, Plácido Domingo was supposed to debut lyrics at an Olympic Committee gala. It did not become the solution some hoped for, and the anthem remained what it is now: familiar, recognisable, and stubbornly silent.

That silence has not made the song any less meaningful. If anything, it has made the anthem more distinctive. Spain remains one of the countries with a lyricless anthem while still competing at the World Cup, which means the moment before kickoff will look unusual only to those expecting every national side to perform the same ritual.

Paulino Cubero once summed up the frustration with a blunt line: “These are the miseries of our country.” It is an exasperated remark, but it captures the odd truth here. Spain have a proud anthem, a proud footballing identity and a place in one of the biggest matches in the game. What they do not have, and will not have against France, is a set of words to sing along to.

So when the teams line up before the FIFA Men’s World Cup semifinal, do not expect Spain’s players to mouth along in unison. The silence is the point. In Spain’s case, the Spanish National Anthem does not lack atmosphere. It lacks lyrics.
