Sally Nugent says people in Scotland have been urged to stay vigilant as wildfire risk is very high this week. The warning covers central Highlands, southern Scotland and eastern Scotland from Wednesday until next Monday, with 28C expected around Fort William.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Wildlife Forum issued the wildfire warning after very dry weather settled in, especially in central and western areas. Kevin Dingwall, a Scottish fire service wildfire tactical adviser, said, "Hot, dry conditions increase the risk of wildfire across Scotland. Even if a warning is not in place where you live, we ask everyone to stay vigilant."

Dingwall also said, "Avoid lighting outdoor fires or barbecues in affected areas, and remember that a single spark can cause significant damage. There is no such thing as a harmless fire." He added, "You can help by sharing wildfire warnings with your family, friends, and any visitors." That gives households a simple next step: pass the warning on before heading outdoors, especially if plans involve open flames or anything that could throw sparks.
Scotland after 31.2C in June
The alert lands after Scotland recorded its hottest day of the year at the end of June, when 31.2C was measured in Threave, Dumfries and Galloway. Heatwaves are counted when temperatures of 25C and above are recorded for three consecutive days, and firefighters in other parts of the UK were already dealing with wildfires over the weekend, with major incidents declared in Conwy and in Glossop on Sunday.
Wildfire warning beyond Scotland
Alistair Fisher, a gritter driver, said he had "funny looks" while spreading sand on the road, a reminder that wildfire risk is not always obvious to the public even when crews are preparing for it. People outside the warned areas are still being told to stay vigilant, which broadens the alert beyond the mapped regions and leaves one practical issue hanging over the week: how many people, homes or acres will end up exposed before next Monday.
