C-SPAN showed Darline Graham Nordone being sworn in on Tuesday to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Lindsey Graham’s sudden death three days earlier. She now joins the Senate with the ability to vote on legislation, approve presidential appointments and help shape US spending priorities for the rest of the term.
Henry McMaster announced her selection on Monday after Donald Trump suggested her for the appointment. McMaster called her Lindsey Graham’s “darling little sister” and said she would “finish his work for him now.”

Nordone used her brief remarks to set out the role she intends to play in the months ahead. She said, “I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States.”
She added, “I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted, and I plan to honour him in this way.” Those comments framed the seat as both a legislative assignment and a family succession, with the immediate work now shifting from announcement to service.
Senate powers for Nordone
Her appointment gives her the full voting power of a senator, but not the assets that came with Lindsey Graham’s long tenure. His committee positions, seniority and political networks do not transfer to her, and Republican leaders will decide her committee assignments.
That leaves her with the formal tools of the office, while the informal influence built over years in Washington stays with the officeholder she replaced. She has never held elected office, and her ability to shape events now depends on the seat itself rather than on Graham’s personal standing.
South Carolina and the US
The succession also fits a wider pattern in US politics. As of 2025, US House of Representatives figures showed that 45 widows had directly succeeded their late husbands in Congress, placing Nordone’s appointment within a long-running family handoff that has often followed a death in office.
For South Carolina, the immediate change is straightforward: the state again has a voting senator. The open question is whether Nordone will seek a full six-year Senate term or serve only as a caretaker until January 2027, a choice she and Henry McMaster have not said she has made.
