Kai Rooney has taken the next step in his Manchester United journey after signing a scholarship deal with the club, a move that also ends the boot restriction that applied to him as an Under-16 player. With the scholarship in place, the 16-year-old can now wear his sponsored Puma boots and move permanently up through the academy age groups.
The change is a straightforward one, but it matters because it marks a formal progression in Rooney's development. Manchester United's policy requires U16 players and younger to wear the same boots, which means sponsored footwear is not allowed in that age group. Last year, Wayne Rooney explained the rule on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast, saying he liked the fact that the academy makes everyone wear the same boots because it gives a level playing field for players who may not be able to afford certain gear.
A clear step in the academy pathway
The scholarship is part of the usual route through the academy system, allowing a youngster to study while continuing to develop as a footballer before eventually becoming eligible to sign a professional contract at 17. For Kai Rooney, it is also another sign that his progress at United is continuing despite a difficult spell earlier in the year.
Kai Rooney had been part of Manchester United's youth ranks since the age of 11, and last August he made his U18 debut at 15 in a 1-0 win against Everton. He was then forced to miss the FA Youth Cup final after suffering a season-ending injury in March. Even so, the scholarship underlines that United still see him as an important part of the club's academy pathway.
There is also a practical side to the move. Because he has now moved beyond the U16 category, he is no longer bound by the same boot rule that applied at that level. That means the Puma deal he signed in 2022, when he was 12 years old, can now be reflected on the pitch as well.

Coleen Rooney wrote, “Brilliant boys,” while Wayne Rooney said, “Proud of you.” It was a brief family response, but an easy one to understand given how significant the moment is for a player still at the start of his Manchester United career.
For now, the key point is simple: Kai Rooney has signed his scholarship, moved up age groups permanently and cleared the rule that had prevented him from wearing his sponsored Puma boots with Manchester United's Under-16s.
