Robert reports England fans detained after Atlanta clash Daily Star

daily star: England and Argentina fans clashed after the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta, and a number of England supporters were detained by Atlanta police in the immediate aftermath of the 2-1 defeat. The disorder stayed local, but it cut across a tournament that had seen relatively few incidents of football violence.

Hudson Grille near Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Trouble flared outside Hudson Grille, close to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the bar was a favourite of England fans. Victorious Argentina supporters walked past England fans there, and police swarmed the area before keeping control for about two hours.

One witness said, “There was a minor skirmish and a number of England fans were led away. Police took control of the situation pretty quickly and the trouble passed.” Photographs from the scene showed some England fans being led away in handcuffs, while others appeared bloodied.

British embassy and Atlanta police

The British embassy said a number of fans were held, but all were released in the course of the evening after the match. Atlanta police, wearing tactical gear and armed with semi-automatic rifles, restored order after the fighting spread to an Irish bar close by.

That response matters because the wider World Cup had produced comparatively little disorder. British police thought no more than 20 supporters were arrested across seven matches, so the Atlanta clash stood out as one of the few occasions when the rivalry turned physical rather than staying on social media.

Falklands taunts in London

The same friction followed England and Argentina beyond Atlanta. A video showed an England fan goading Argentines with a Falklands flag, Argentina’s players celebrated their win by unfurling a banner that read “The Malvinas are Argentine”, and in London a lone Argentina fan was rescued from a crowd on Regent Street after England’s defeat.

Police led that fan through the crowd and to the safety of the police van, while the crowd jeered as he was moved away. The immediate Atlanta question is simpler: how many fans were injured or detained in total after the clash, once the evening releases are counted against the photographs and the eyewitness account?
