Sarah Spivey, the KSAT Weather Authority Meteorologist, reported that runoff flooding sent the Guadalupe River rising rapidly and into homes. Rescues and evacuations were underway in Kerr County as floodwaters made it impossible for some residents to reach higher ground.

Kerr County flood response

The county urged people to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to move to higher ground if it was safe to do so. That left some people with two competing instructions at once: stay put because the water blocked escape routes, or leave only if a safer route was still reachable.

The flooding came as another round of heavy rain moved across the Hill Country, with saturated ground and swollen rivers already increasing the risk of rapid runoff. In a place where water was already moving fast, the difference between a closed road and a trapped home was measured in minutes.

Hunt and Kerrville

The clearest immediate need for residents in Hunt and Kerrville was to stay off flooded roads and follow local warnings tied to the flash flood emergency. The situation on Thursday morning was still centered on rescues, evacuations, and people who could not get out on their own.

For residents already boxed in by floodwater, the next step was not travel but waiting for access to return and for higher ground to be reachable again. The county’s warning made that the priority while the rain continued.
