Chicago Fire FC’s home match against the Vancouver Whitecaps was pushed back on the afternoon of game day, with the club announcing around 3:20 p.m. that the fixture would be rescheduled because Chicago’s air quality had dropped to one of its worst levels of the year.
The match, originally set to be the Fire’s first back following the FIFA World Cup break, will now be played on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Soldier Field. The same-day change also affected plans for more than 40,000 fans, along with the anticipated home debut of Robert Lewandowski and the scheduled Two Friends post-match concert.
Health and safety came first
Dave Baldwin, the Chicago Fire FC President of Business Operations, said the decision was made with supporters and players in mind. He said the club shared fans’ disappointment, particularly with the anticipation around the return from the FIFA World Cup break and the expected crowd at Soldier Field.
He also pointed to the scale of the occasion, describing the matchup with Vancouver, the Robert Lewandowski debut, and the Two Friends concert as part of what was supposed to be a special night in Chicago. But Baldwin was clear that the club could not ignore the conditions, adding that health and safety must come first.
What fans needed to know
For supporters wondering whether the game was still happening, the answer was no on the original night. The match was officially moved to Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The club also said tickets for the original date would remain valid for the rescheduled fixture, easing at least one concern for fans who had already planned to attend. Forecasters expected wildfire smoke to begin clearing on Friday, but the move had already been made once the AQI reached 291 and conditions became too severe to proceed.
It was a difficult decision, but a straightforward one in the end. In a night that was meant to mark a major home occasion, the Fire chose caution over compromise, and the hope now is that supporters will return when the match is finally played.
