Leeds United are moving to sign Tarik Muharemovic for £34m from Sassuolo, a deal that would make the 23-year-old the most expensive defender in the club's history. It is a bold move, but one that fits the profile of a player who has been building a reputation for composure, intelligence and calmness under pressure.
The size of the fee tells you plenty about how Leeds view him. Muharemovic is not being bought only for what he does without the ball. He is a left-footed centre-back who can pass, carry and organise, and that combination has made him a highly sought-after defender.
Why Leeds are paying so much
Five years ago, Slobodan Starcevic was already urging caution about comparisons with Giorgio Chiellini. His view was that Muharemovic should not be seen as the next Chiellini because he is a different type of centre-back altogether.
That distinction matters. Starcevic described Muharemovic as a defender who builds his game through composure in possession, an excellent first pass, the ability to carry the ball under pressure and tactical intelligence. Chiellini, by contrast, was defined by uncompromising defending, aggression and leadership at the back.
For Leeds, that suggests a defender who can do more than simply clear danger. In a team that will want stability, progression and better control in deeper areas, Muharemovic offers a modern profile that fits the demands of the role.
The qualities that made him stand out early
Starcevic said Muharemovic showed qualities that set him apart from most players of his age even before he had fully established himself. He first stood out in an U19 game against Croatia, where his composure and discipline were evident.
He later played around 30 minutes for Bosnia-Herzegovina's U23s against Qatar's U23s, and even in that brief spell the same traits came through. Starcevic said he remained calm, tactically disciplined and confident in possession, adding that age was never a limitation when a player had quality, character and football intelligence.
At nearly 190 centimetres tall, he also brings the physical presence expected of a top-level centre-back. The combination of size, left-footed balance and technical security is exactly why he is being described as such a sought-after option.
From Juventus setback to captaincy
Muharemovic's path has not been straightforward. After leaving Wolfsberger and moving to Juventus, he fractured his leg, a setback that could have slowed his progress significantly.
Instead, he came back strongly. Starcevic said he quickly established himself as a regular starter and eventually became captain of Juventus's U21 side. That response says as much about his mentality as it does about his ability.
He then moved to Sassuolo, where he won promotion in his first season before the club went on to finish mid-table in Serie A. For a young defender, that is a useful stretch of experience: pressure, promotion and the demands of top-flight football all in one move.
What Leeds are getting
The move to Leeds would be the next big step. Starcevic called the switch to Sassuolo ideal because it gave Muharemovic a club with less pressure and greater opportunities to develop in one of the world's most tactically demanding leagues.
He also pointed to the play-off matches against Wales and Italy, where Muharemovic formed an exceptionally solid central defensive partnership with Nikola Katic. That kind of game-time, in serious competitive matches, is part of why Leeds are prepared to make such a significant investment.
There is also the reminder of the World Cup incident in which he was fouled by Folarin Balogun, another sign that he has already been tested on a bigger stage. Leeds are not simply buying promise. They are buying a defender whose development has already passed through Juventus, Sassuolo and Bosnia-Herzegovina's youth and age-group football.
If the deal is completed, Leeds will be making a clear statement about the level they expect from their defence. Muharemovic would arrive as a record signing in his position, but also as a player whose career so far suggests he is ready for a major step forward.
