Manchester United are strongly considering an official move for Roma midfielder Manu Kone as they look to complete a third midfield signing of the summer window, but Chelsea have emerged as a credible threat to the deal. The 19-cap France star has moved closer to the top of United's list after a period in which several other targets were priced out of reach.
That shift comes after United added two proven Premier League names in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85m over the last week, while earlier attempts to land Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali were understood to be beyond their limits. In that context, Kone has become a far more realistic and increasingly attractive option for INEOS and Jason Wilcox.
Why United rate Kone
Graeme Bailey has said Kone was a player United and other English clubs had appreciated for some time, even if there were historical doubts about him. The key change, Bailey explained, is that Kone has grown substantially since moving to Rome and has become a trusted player under Didier Deschamps for France.
That matters because United are not just looking for ability, but for maturity and reliability in a midfield that has already been strengthened once this week. Bailey added that United feel Kone has matured and that is appealing, even if he does not bring Premier League experience. In their view, he has what they want and need for the final vacancy in the middle of the pitch.
The Chelsea factor
The timing is important. On July 9, United made contact over a deal for Kone and were given a green light to seal his signing, but in recent days their interest slowed while Jason Wilcox assessed several top options. On Thursday, Fulham's Sander Berge was one of the names being taken seriously, before Chelsea were also revealed as a credible threat to United's wish to land Kone.
That means United may not have the field to themselves for long. Chelsea's interest adds pressure to move decisively, especially when Kone is now being described as one of the more serious options for United's last remaining midfield slot.
A player with a growing reputation
Kone's case is also strengthened by what he has already done on the international stage. He featured for France during their run to the World Cup semi-finals, and French media debated Didier Deschamps' decision to leave him out of the starting line-up to face Spain. His absence was felt when Rodri ran the show against Adrien Rabiot and a seemingly 3/4 fit Aurelien Tchouameni.
For United, that is another part of the argument. They are not simply chasing a name; they are looking at a midfielder who has already been trusted by club and country and who now appears to fit the profile of the sort of signing they want to make at Old Trafford.
A few summers ago, Liverpool looked long and hard at Kone before eventually opting for other targets, which underlines that he has been on the radar of top English clubs for some time. United now appear ready to take the next step, but with Chelsea circling, the race may need to move quickly.
