This was never going to be a long-running mystery. Marcelo Saracchi has now made it official: the Celtic Player chapter is over, and the left-back has said he will not be returning to Celtic.
That matters because this was not some fleeting cameo or forgotten loan spell. It was a proper stint, one that produced 27 appearances, one goal and two assists. For a player on loan from Boca Juniors, that is a meaningful body of work, and it explains why the farewell carries a little more weight than the usual polite goodbye.
A farewell that closes the door
On Instagram, Saracchi addressed Celtic fans directly. “Dear Celtic fans, I'm writing this to say goodbye,” he said, before describing the spell as “an intense, beautiful year together where we achieved so many of our goals.” That is the language of a player who has enjoyed the experience and understood the bond, even if the ending is not the one he wanted.
He did not dress it up either. Saracchi said that he and his agent “did absolutely everything within our power to make a return to Glasgow happen,” but added that he is “truly gutted” that he will not be able to continue at the club at this stage of his career. That is as direct as these farewells tend to get, and it leaves very little room for wishful thinking.
What Celtic lose
From Celtic’s point of view, the numbers tell a fairly straightforward story. Twenty-seven appearances, a goal and two assists is not the output of a peripheral squad player drifting in and out of relevance. It suggests a footballer who was involved, trusted and capable of contributing in more than one way.
Of course, not every loan ends in a permanent move, and not every goodbye is dramatic. But this one does underline something important: if a player has done enough to make supporters wonder whether he might stay, then losing him still leaves a gap to be considered. Celtic now know the answer to the question. He is not coming back.
And Saracchi’s own message leaves no ambiguity about the tone. He thanked the club, thanked the support and wished everyone “nothing but the best for what's ahead.” It is a clean ending, even if it is an unhappy one for anyone hoping to see the relationship extended.
So the verdict is simple. Marcelo Saracchi has closed his Celtic story, and the 27 appearances he made on loan from Boca Juniors now stand as the full record of his time in Glasgow.
