Daniel Sean James appeared at the Old Bailey on Thursday after being charged over the killing of Kirandeep Kaur. Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall said he is accused of breaking into her home in Hayes and stabbing her while she slept in bed with her husband and three-month-old baby.
The court heard that Kaur, 24, was attacked in Uxbridge Road in Hayes, west London, on Sunday morning. She suffered a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 08:26 BST.

James, 46, appeared by videolink from Wormwood Scrubs. Judge Nigel Lickley KC set a plea hearing for 1 October and remanded him into custody.
Sumnall told the court that Kaur's husband awoke to the sound of a scream from his wife and saw a figure leaving the bedroom. That account placed the attack inside the room where the family were asleep, not outside the home where the first violence was alleged to have started.

The prosecution also says James is alleged to have stabbed a man in his 20s in the back on the street minutes before the fatal attack. He was later detained nearby after jumping out of a window and breaking both ankles, with police taking him into custody after hospital treatment.
He is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a blade. The plea hearing in October will be the next court step in Kirandeep Kaur's murder case.
