The answer to where Thomas Tuchel is from is straightforward: he is German. The less straightforward question is why England are already talking about his future as if one painful night should wipe out the wider plan.
Wayne Rooney has made the case plainly enough. He does not think England should be rushing to move on from Tuchel after the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday. His view is simple: keep Tuchel unless Pep Guardiola is available, because the alternative options are not exactly lining up to rescue anybody.
A contract that ties England to the plan
Tuchel was appointed by the FA in January 2025 on an 18-month mission to win the World Cup. In February, he signed a two-year contract extension, and that matters now because it places England’s coaching direction firmly into the summer of 2028. That is not a short-term gamble. It is a serious commitment.
After the 2-1 defeat on Wednesday, Tuchel retained the backing of the FA and said he intends to stay to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2028. So despite the noise, this is not a case of an embarrassed governing body scrambling for the exit. The road map is still there.
Rooney’s point is awkward, but not unreasonable
Rooney’s argument is not that Tuchel has been flawless. It is that top managers learn, improve and get better, and that England would struggle to find someone of similar quality unless Guardiola somehow becomes available. He also pointed out the obvious problem with the World Cup experience debate: Tuchel was never going to arrive with that knowledge until he had lived through it.
That is where the Capello comparison bites. Rooney’s point was that the World Cup is a different animal and you need to feel the environment. Tuchel has now felt it. England have now felt the pain of failure with him in charge. The next question is whether that experience sharpens the project or simply exposes its limits.
There is also a bigger issue here. Rooney said the FA told everyone Tuchel was coming in to win the World Cup and take England to the next level, which makes the timing of the contract extension look slightly odd to him. If the priority was always the World Cup, then locking in the manager before the tournament was over was a bold move. Bold, yes. Confusing, perhaps. But not automatically wrong.

What will decide things is whether the FA believes his German pedigree, his record and his adaptability are enough to carry England through the next cycle. Rooney clearly does.
