Kyle Teel left the White Sox’s series opener Monday at Texas with an apparent left ankle injury, adding another worrying moment to a season that has already been interrupted by time on the injured list. He had only recently returned after missing most of the first three months with hamstring and knee injuries.
Teel was helped off the field in the bottom of the second inning, an early exit that immediately puts more pressure on the White Sox at catcher. The club had viewed him as a defensive upgrade over Drew Romo and Edgar Quero, which makes the timing of this setback especially significant with the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching.
Teel had just started to build momentum
The injury comes at a frustrating point for Teel, who returned from the injured list on June 22 and had begun to find some rhythm. Over the weekend, manager Will Venable said Teel had been “getting into his rhythm and into his form,” a sign that the White Sox felt his game was trending in the right direction.
That progress matters because Teel’s season numbers show how much he has had to fight just to get into a groove. He entered the day hitting.190/.271/.317 with two homers and 14 RBI, a line shaped by the missed time and the stop-start nature of his year.
What it means for the White Sox
For the White Sox, the immediate concern is simple: whether Teel’s injury is minor or another setback that keeps him out for a meaningful stretch. After most of the first three months of the season were already lost to hamstring and knee issues, any new problem would be a blow to both the lineup and the club’s catching plans.
It also comes at an awkward moment in the calendar. With the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, the White Sox now have another health question to weigh while they decide how to handle the position and whether they need to adjust their plans.
For now, the focus is on the injury itself and on how quickly the White Sox can get clarity. Teel had just started to settle in again, and Monday’s exit has put that momentum on hold once more.
