Instagram Messages outage sends reports past 3,000

Instagram messages were disrupted during a major outage that pushed reports past 3,000 on Downdetector. Some Instagram DMs sat unsent in the thread, and older messages sometimes would not load.

Downdetector saw the spike

Downdetector first logged more than 2,000 Instagram reports at the start of the outage. Later, reports climbed to around 3,200 before dropping to just under 400, then falling again to 2,600.

Instagram DMs drew the complaints

The main user complaint was direct messages. A sent message could stay parked in the thread instead of reaching the other person, which left conversations looking stuck even when the app itself was still open.

Some users also hit an older-message load error when they scrolled back in a thread. That points to a breakdown in more than one part of the messaging flow, not just delivery on the outgoing side.

Meta showed No Known Issues

Meta's status page still showed No Known Issues while the reports were rising and falling. Meta had not acknowledged the outage on that page at the time described, so users were left to judge the problem from the spike in reports and their own failed messages.

For anyone trying to use Instagram DMs during the outage, the practical move was simple: try again later instead of assuming a message had gone through. The unresolved question is what caused the message failures while the status page stayed unchanged.
