Richard Madeley apologised on Good Morning Britain on Thursday morning after Jay Akbar yawned live on air during a report from West Mersea beach. The awkward exchange came as the programme was trying to move a serious update from the coast, and Madeley had to steady the broadcast before handing back to the reporter.
Madeley’s live apology
“Jay Akbar, can you tell us the latest please?” Madeley asked from the ITV studio, before the response failed to come through cleanly. He then said, “No, I’m sorry,” and added, “He’s obviously having some communications issues there for the time being,” before moving on.
Later on Thursday morning, the issues were resolved and Akbar returned to the programme with the report. He was live on a beach in West Mersea to tell viewers about a tragic accident, and people were asked to stay away from the area. In live television, even a brief delay can become the story when the segment is already carrying public urgency.
West Mersea beach response
On Wednesday evening, the Coastguard, Essex Police, the RNLI and the East of England Air Ambulance were all in attendance in West Mersea near Colchester. The West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team said, “We have responded to a tragic incident on West Mersea beach. Our thoughts are with the family involved.”
An Essex Police spokesperson said, “Emergency services are currently on scene of an ongoing incident in West Mersea, Colchester.” The spokesperson also asked the public to avoid the Seaview Avenue and beach area. That instruction is the practical takeaway for anyone near the scene: stay clear and leave the response effort to the services already there.
Two live mishaps
The yawn was quickly reshared by viewers at home and was described as the second awkward moment caught on camera in just two days. On Wednesday morning, Robert Jenrick was caught calling his interview with Ed Balls and Susanna Reid a “waste of time” when he did not realise his microphone was still on.
Ed Balls later said, “I think it wasn’t a waste of time. I think Robert Jenrick gave us very clear answers on the police investigation.” He also said, “It’s not a waste of time for him to make clear that he believes there’s no police investigation. So, it was good he came on the programme.”
For viewers, the immediate question is less about the broadcast hiccup than the incident on West Mersea beach. Akbar’s report brought the programme back to the emergency response, and the public advice remained simple: avoid Seaview Avenue and the beach area while the scene stays active.
