Romania carried out its first Romania F-16 drone interception on Friday when an F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone in its airspace near Padina at around 11am. The drone had entered from the Black Sea side, and fragments later fell on a wheat field without causing injuries or damage.
Padina and Sulina
The Romanian defence ministry said radar picked up the drone at around 9.30am local time, about 12 miles east of Sulina on the Black Sea coast. Romania scrambled two F-16s and two Eurofighter Typhoons, then used one F-16 to fire near Padina, turning a repeated breach into a direct air-defense response on Nato territory.
Gheorghita Vlad said, "Visually, the pilots reported the drone looked to be a Shahed type," which matches the shape of a drone Romanian forces have been watching since the war in Ukraine spread pressure across the Black Sea approaches. The ministry’s timeline shows the drone was tracked before it was shot down, then fell as fragments into farmland rather than into a populated area.
Nicusor Dan and the pilot
Nicusor Dan said a Romanian pilot shot down the drone and wrote, "The area was uninhabited, so the pilot was able to shoot without any risk." That detail explains why the engagement stayed limited to one aircraft firing after the drone was already inside Romanian airspace, with no report of impact beyond the wheat field.
Romanian officials said the drone’s origin and purpose had not yet been identified, but a Romanian army source told, "There is an ongoing investigation to determine the origin of the drone. But in this part of the world it is Russia that is the attacker." The two statements sit side by side: attribution has not been established, yet the operational context is a pattern of Russian drone breaches that Romanian authorities have counted more than a dozen times since 2022 and at least 15 times this year alone.
Romania shares a 650-km land border with Ukraine, and the airspace violation near Sulina is now being examined for where the drone came from and what route it followed before the F-16 fired.
