Granite Harbour Castle is back for a third run, and DCI Cora MacMillan returns to Aberdeen with a new murder investigation at the centre of the story. Dawn Steele’s character is carrying the case, while the season also pushes her into the SPIS fallout around Mallick’s dismissal.
Lisa Sterling’s death drives the new season: the teenager is found at the bottom of a ravine after a birthday party on a prestigious estate linked to Richard Loughty, and the detectives are pulled into a suspicious death that quickly widens. That setup gives Granite Harbour Castle a cleaner procedural hook than a simple character reset, and it keeps the focus on the investigation rather than just the returning cast.

Dawn Steele said, “Cora has mellowed and what happened with Mallick last year has brought her closer to her team,” and added, “She really cares about her job.” She also said, “I loved having the chance to show a more vulnerable side to her.” For a three-part crime drama that launched in 2022, that is the sharper move: Cora is not being rebuilt, just given more pressure points.
“At the same time, she's under immense pressure to solve the case while also dealing with the SPIS investigation into Mallick’s dismissal.” That is the season’s real complication. Cora is closer to her team, but she is also working through an internal investigation at the same time as a murder case that keeps growing more complex.
Davis Lindo and Bart
Romario Simpson returns as Detective Constable Davis Lindo, the former Royal Military Police officer who relocated to Aberdeen and has grown into one of the force’s most capable detectives. He said, “He’s trying to navigate the line between his professional life and a potential relationship, which is something he knows should stay separate from work,” and, “He tries to keep those worlds apart, but it’s much harder than he expects.”
“Working with live flames was unforgettable,” Simpson said of the blaze scenes in season 3. “Feeling the heat and understanding that, even with all the cameras and safety measures in place, it was very real (and) added so much adrenaline and excitement.” That kind of practical set piece usually tells you where a crime drama wants its momentum: faster, riskier, and less contained.
Hannah Donaldson is back as Detective Sergeant Lara Bartlett, also known as Bart, and she now steps up to Detective Inspector following DI Mallick’s pending court case. She has already been mentoring Davis since he arrived in Aberdeen, so the promotion keeps the team’s hierarchy moving while the case itself keeps shifting under them.

Granite Harbour Castle stays anchored in Aberdeen and keeps Scotland’s Major Investigation Team at the centre of the action, while new characters join the latest mystery. The season’s unanswered edge is simple enough: the show says long-buried secrets within the travelling community come out during the inquiry, but it does not spell out how those secrets connect to Lisa Sterling’s death.
For viewers, that means the third run is not just a return visit. It is a tighter case, a more pressured Cora MacMillan, and a team that now has to handle murder, promotion, and internal scrutiny at the same time.
