Girlguiding has unveiled its new Girl Guide uniform, the first major redesign of its range since 1990. The update means members only need a top from the new range to be considered in uniform, while the old uniform can still be worn until it needs replacing.
Felicity Oswald, Girlguiding's chief executive, said practicality, comfort and sustainability were at the centre of the redesign. She also said the range was "all about providing girls with the freedom to express themselves, whilst feeling part of our amazing organisation".
Girlguiding and June feedback
The new range was shaped by feedback from thousands of Guides, Rainbows, Brownies and Rangers. In June, a Girlguiding survey of 2,000 girls aged six to 16 in the UK found that 93% said they felt most comfortable when able to choose how they styled themselves.
Girlguiding said the range combines its heritage with modern colours and prints. It includes 30 items of clothing and 15 accessories and neckerchiefs, with prices starting at £12 for a T-shirt.
Angellica Bell on style
Angellica Bell, a Girlguiding ambassador and presenter, said the new design gives "girls and volunteers the freedom to style it the way that suits them". She added: "The new uniform empowers girls and volunteers to embrace their individuality."
The redesign also adds hidden pockets in waist bands, thumb holes and badge sashes that double as cross-body bags. Because members do not have to buy the new range straightaway, the practical change for families is a slower replacement cycle rather than a single date when the old uniform stops being acceptable.
Brownies and Rangers range
Girlguiding said this is the first time in 30 years that it has updated its entire range at the same time. The immediate choice for Brownies and Rangers, as well as other members, is simple: keep using the existing uniform until replacement is needed, or move to the new range when ready.
