Greater Manchester Police officer Tara Sampson has reached the Miss North West final after walking the catwalk at Park Hall Hotel & Spa in Lancashire. The 24-year-old from Chorley is now in line for a place in the Miss England final on November 17.

“I was really shocked to be put through as it was my first ever beauty pageant,” Sampson said after qualifying. The result gives her a direct route into the next stage of a competition that narrows the field before Miss England, and it puts a serving police officer into a space built around presentation, interview and performance.
She said the pageant appealed because Miss England uses the motto beauty with a purpose, and she added that she has never modelled before. For a first-time entrant, reaching the final of Miss North West is the key gatekeeping step: she has already cleared the local round that decides who stays alive in the national race.
GMP, uniform and catwalk
Sampson said she has been with GMP for just over year now, and that policing is “the hardest job I’ve ever done both mentally and physically.” She also said the pageant work was “completely out of my comfort zone,” because the catwalk and interview are not part of her daily routine.
That contrast is the point of the story. One side of her week is a job that demands quick decisions and composure; the other asks for poise, fundraising, talent and sports rounds. She said only her unit sergeant knows about her entry so far, though she expects to tell more colleagues soon.
Beauty with a purpose
“I just thought 'why not?' and I went for it,” Sampson said, adding that she enjoyed getting “out of my big heavy uniform and get glammed up because at heart I am a very girly girl.” She said the pageant’s fundraising element mattered to her, which makes this more than a one-night appearance in a ball gown.
The practical test now is simple: Sampson has already advanced once, but she still has to negotiate the Beauty with a Purpose fundraising competition, a talent round and a sports round to get to Miss England. Her police background gives her discipline, but pageantry will still decide whether the run continues on November 17.
