Sue Shapses finds Eating to nine hours improved test results

Sue Shapses found that older women who kept eating to a nine-hour window did better on some cognitive tests than women who spread meals across about 12 hours. The pilot study involved 47 women aged 50 to 79 living with overweight or obesity, and the differences were seen after six months.

Shapses said the effects were "modest" and that the pattern suggested time-restricted eating may improve memory for everyday tasks and reduce mistakes linked to memory, attention and problem solving. She also said people who do not eat outside an eight to nine-hour window and stop eating four hours before going to sleep may see "additional benefits".

Nutrition 2026 in Maryland

Details of the study were presented at Nutrition 2026 in Maryland. Twenty-six women were advised to eat only within a nine-hour window, typically between 10am and 6pm, while the others spread meals across about 12 hours.

The study also asked both groups to cut 500 calories a day from their diet for six months. At the end, both groups had similar weight loss averaging about 7kg, so the cognitive results did not come with a larger drop on the scale. Fitness News often tracks how small, practical changes are tested in everyday settings, and this trial does the same for eating habits.

Wendy Hall and brain health

Wendy Hall, head of nutritional sciences at King’s College London, said: "Time-restricted eating is a plausible approach to supporting cognitive health in midlife and older adults with overweight," adding weight to the idea that meal timing may matter alongside food choice. In January, a review found that finishing eating before 7pm was associated with improvements in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure and markers of metabolic health.

The sharper signal in this trial came on spatial planning and problem solving, where the narrow-window group performed better, while there were hints of fewer errors on memory and learning tests. On some multitasking and reaction time tests, both groups performed the same, leaving a practical takeaway for readers: the timing change may help with certain kinds of thinking, but it did not improve every test the researchers used.

The next step is larger testing. For older adults who already struggle to fit meals into long daytime spans, this study suggests the question is no longer only what is eaten, but whether the clock around meals can shape how the brain works.
