Nathan Fillion put Star Trek ahead of Firefly this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. He told Steve Weintraub that his favorite science fiction universe is the one built around the Enterprise, not the role that made him famous in genre circles.
"I'm really into the Star Trek universe for the fact that there's no more money; if you need anything, there's a replicator...everything's free. You can just kind of...pursue interests, and you're always at peace because you're never hungry or want for anything." That is a practical answer, not a nostalgia play, and it makes his preference unusually specific.
Enterprise over Mal Reynolds
"The original has a very special place in my heart, but I'm a Next Generation guy," Fillion said. He added, "I grew up with...the many men and women of the Enterprise."
That puts a clean line through a familiar genre comparison. Fillion broke out as Mal Reynolds on Firefly, but he is also tied to two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and appears in DC projects as Guy Gardner, so the franchise he names as his favorite is not the one most closely attached to his screen image.
The Rookie enters season nine
The timing gives the comment extra weight because The Rookie is headed into its ninth season this fall and will begin shooting shortly. Fillion stars as John Nolan, a divorcé from Pennsylvania who relocates to Los Angeles to join the LAPD as a 40-year-old rookie after helping stop a robbery in his hometown.
Created by Alexi Hawley and inspired by the real-life story of William Norcross, the series has already moved past its original premise. John Nolan learned the ropes at the department, became an able and capable police officer, and married Bailey Nune, played by Jenna Dewan.
