Adrian Padeanu wrote that the BMW i4 Convertible has been spotted disguised as a test mule for the first time, with a possible 2028 debut attached to it. The sighting moves the car from speculation into active testing and gives BMW convertible buyers a clearer timeline for an electric two-door four-seat model.
Padeanu said, "No longer just a rumor, the BMW i4 Convertible has been spotted disguised as a test mule ahead of a potential launch in 2028." He also wrote, "we have definitive proof it’s happening." The prototype appears to have most of its final body panels in place, but it still lacks its final headlights and taillights.
Neue Klasse and BMW
The i4 Convertible will be built on the Neue Klasse platform and is expected to fully embrace that design language. BMW’s first order of business is to roll out the iX4 crossover-coupe sometime this fall, with the i3 Touring expected to join the lineup in 2027 before the i4 Convertible in 2028.
The testing is notable because BMW recently discontinued the Z4 and the 8 Series Convertible, yet it is still developing a convertible in the same niche. The camouflage on the mule creates the illusion of a conventional grille with small kidney grilles, while the hidden grille is a closed-off horizontal piece that will merge with the headlights.
4 Series Convertible Roof
The i4 Convertible will use an electrically folding fabric roof, like the current 4 Series Convertible. BMW prefers fabric roofs because they are lighter and less complex, cost less to produce, and take up less space when folded, which leaves more room in the trunk.
The interior is expected to carry over the i3 Sedan’s cabin philosophy, including the removal of the iDrive rotary controller in the Neue Klasse layout. Padeanu also wrote that "the i4 Convertible will be built on a dedicated EV platform."
The latest spotting points to a model that is still early in its testing cycle, but already far enough along to show production bodywork and roof packaging. If BMW keeps to the outlined sequence, the electric convertible follows the iX4 and i3 Touring rather than replacing the gas-powered 4 Series Convertible, which is said to remain in production until mid-2029.
