Grayson Waller stormed back onto WWE NXT on July 28, 2026, and turned a surprise appearance into a direct challenge for the NXT Championship. He also used the promo to go after Austin Theory, Cruz Montana, Mike Santana, TNA, and the NXT men’s division in one stretch.
Waller Targets Austin Theory
“The last two years of my career have been an absolute embarrassment, and I’m man enough to admit it,” Waller said on WWE NXT. He then sharpened the attack on Theory with, “I spent a year carrying £240 of idiot on my back, making him relevant again.”
That line did two jobs at once. It put Theory in the center of the segment while also letting Waller claim the recent stretch of his own career only had value because of that partnership. Waller also said people actually chanted Theory’s name, a reminder that he was trying to reclaim the narrative before the ring even cleared.
NXT Championship and TNA
Waller said he wants the NXT Championship and described it as a title that has been held by the best. He also said he is coming for Cruz Montana, who was identified as Mike Santana, and added that he likes the new name.
His criticism of Santana stretched beyond NXT. “It ain’t 2005, lad. Being the top guy in TNA is like being the best basketball player at the local YMCA, I’m not impressed,” Waller said. He followed that with a six-week tease, saying a shiny new toy would arrive and that everyone would forget about Santana.
The Men’s Division
Waller did not stop at individual targets. He called the NXT men’s division soft, said the women are running laps around the men, and put numbers to his own argument: roughly 90% of the men believe they should be called up, while only about 10% are actually ready.
That is the part of the segment that pushes the story beyond a simple insult exchange. Waller praised independent wrestlers for what they can do inside the ring, then said many become charisma vacuums when handed a microphone. A production assistant tried to get him to wrap up, but he refused, kept talking, and only stopped after his microphone was cut off. He kept speaking as he exited the ring without one.
