Phipps stable owner Andrea Phipps died Tuesday in New York City after a short illness. The loss removes the matriarch of the Phipps Stable and leaves her six children, 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren to carry the family forward.

Phipps was the wife of Ogden Mills Phipps and the co-owner and breeder of Golden Tempo, which won the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Her name also appears with Smuggler, Good Reward, Pine Island, Peristently, Point of Entry, Boisterous, Imagining and Mr. Speaker, each of which ran exclusively for the Phipps Stable.
That record ties her death to more than one family role at once: she was not only part of the Phipps Stable, she helped shape the stable’s racing identity through ownership and breeding. The family said a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date, and it asked for donations to Let's Win Pancreatic Cancer or The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation instead of flowers.

Andrea Phipps was a native of Oneonta, NY, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before pursuing a career as a registered nurse. Her family line includes Kayce Reagan Hughes, Kelley Reagan Farish, Lilly Phipps Cardwell, Daisy Phipps Pulito, Samantha Phipps Alvarez and Ogden Phipps II.
Ogden Mills (Dinny) Phipps died on April 6, 2016, leaving Andrea Phipps as the family member most closely identified in the announcement with the Phipps Stable. Her death on Tuesday closes that chapter for a family whose name remains attached to horses that ran only for the stable, including Golden Tempo, and the private gathering later will be the first formal moment for the family to mark that loss.
