Ophthalmologist Dr Rajat Kapoor said vision loss does not always begin in the eyes, warning that blurred vision, double vision or part of the visual field can be affected by problems in the brain. He shared his comments with HT Lifestyle and said the brain-eye link can expose neurological disease early.
Kapoor said, "Vision is a partnership between the eye and the brain," and added, "This close relationship means that problems affecting the brain can sometimes first show up through changes in vision, while certain eye findings can offer important clues about underlying neurological diseases."

Kapoor said the eyes work much like cameras, but the brain processes, interprets and makes sense of what people see. He said damage anywhere along the visual pathway, from the optic nerve to the visual cortex, can affect sight. That is why a person may have perfectly healthy eyes and still experience blurred vision, double vision or loss of part of the visual field.
He named stroke, brain tumours, multiple sclerosis and inflammation of the optic nerve as conditions that can affect vision. He also said patients often reach an ophthalmologist's clinic before any other sign of a neurological problem appears.

Kapoor said persistent or sudden visual changes should never be ignored, even if a routine eye examination appears normal. He advised that people with those symptoms should preferably consult a neuro-ophthalmologist. He said severe headache with double vision, brief episodes of vision loss, flashes of light or blurring that will not go away are red flags.
He said those symptoms can signal raised pressure inside the skull, migraine with visual aura or other neurological issues, and need a proper workup by a neurologist, not just a stronger pair of glasses.
Children and eye examinations
Kapoor also said reading difficulties in children are not necessarily linked with poor eyesight. He said they may stem from learning disorders, attention-related problems or issues in how the brain processes visual information.
"Although every child should undergo a comprehensive eye examination, it is equally important to recognise that not every learning problem can be corrected with spectacles alone," he said. He added that changes in the optic nerve, abnormal eye movements, pupil reactions or retinal blood vessels may sometimes offer early clues to raised intracranial pressure, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease.
For readers with sudden or persistent vision changes, Kapoor's advice is direct: do not rely on a normal eye check alone, and seek a specialist evaluation when symptoms keep returning or do not clear.
