Season 15 opens the exit
Miñoso started in the pilot as a guest star, appeared in virtually every episode of Season 1, and was promoted to a series regular at the start of Season 2. That path makes the departure more than a routine cast change: he was one of four original cast members still on Chicago Fire, alongside Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, and Christian Stolte.
The Season 15 rollout also brings Da’Vinchi in as a new firefighter, while Miranda Rae Mayo and Taylor Kinney have new deals and Victor Teran takes over as showrunner after Andrea Newman exited following 14 seasons. For a long-running ensemble, that is a real reset, not a cosmetic one.
Joe Cruz’s family story
Joe Cruz’s exit arrives while his family storyline is still moving. Last season, he and his wife announced they were having a baby, and in the Season 14 finale he said he would love to welcome a third boy into the Cruz family because “girls are scary.”
By the end of that same finale, his wife had been rushed to the hospital after slight bleeding, a nurse at Gaffney said the blood vessel issue was minor, and the Cruz family was expecting twins. That leaves Cruz in the middle of a domestic turn that still has to be written through, which is exactly why the early Season 15 episodes matter.
Gaffney, Pascal, and the cliffhanger
The Season 14 finale did not stop with Cruz’s family scene. It ended with a storage facility fire and a roof-collapse emergency, while several main Chicago Fire characters went inside and Stella, Pascal, and Herrmann remained outside calling Mayday over the radios.
Former Chief Pascal also returned in the finale to talk with Severide about his professional options, as Severide weighed Chief of Firehouse and Chief of Fire Investigation. That broader shakeup puts Season 15 in a rare position: one original cast departure, one new firefighter, and a showrunner change all landing at once.
The real question for viewers is not whether Joe Minoso is leaving; it is how Chicago Fire uses those handful of early episodes to land Joe Cruz’s exit without dropping the twins storyline or the fallout from the finale. A clean wrap should keep the family arc intact and give the character a finish that matches the run he had since Season 1.
