Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association with three breaches of Rule E3.1, adding another layer of uncertainty to a case that is already hanging over the club as the new season approaches.
The charge, which was announced last Wednesday, is part of the wider Spygate scandal involving Southampton. The Football Association began its investigation on 21 May, focusing on misconduct between December and May. Eckert had until Tuesday to submit his response.
What the charge means
The latest development matters because Southampton are trying to move forward after already being punished over the same wider issue. The club were previously handed a four-point deduction for the upcoming campaign after admitting three spying charges, and they were also expelled from last season's Championship play-off final.
That leaves Southampton dealing with both the practical and mental strain of an unresolved disciplinary process. The FA case is continuing into August, which means the club's build-up to the season is still being interrupted while the hearing process runs its course.
Eckert: focus stays on football
Eckert said the situation is in the back of his mind, but stressed that he is trying to keep his attention on the work needed for the season ahead. He said he would be lying if he claimed it was not there, and added that he thinks that is true for everyone involved.
He also pointed to the day-to-day demands of pre-season, saying there is so much to prepare for, including training work and the transfer window. His view is that once he locks into what is needed at the moment, that is all that matters.
At the same time, Eckert made clear that everyone at the club will be glad when the decision finally comes. Until then, he said, he will keep his head down, keep working and trust that the players are in a good place.
What comes next
Southampton's immediate schedule is already crowded. They are due to play Preussen Munster in a friendly on Saturday, open the season with a Carabao Cup fixture against Colchester next weekend and begin their Championship campaign away to Watford on 16 August.
The club are still listed as fifth favourites, but the football side of the equation is only part of the story right now. With the FA process still unresolved, Southampton enter the new campaign trying to manage both preparation and uncertainty at the same time.
